Endurance Riding in Croatia: Tradition, Passion and Endless Kilometres

Endurance riding is one of the most demanding equestrian disciplines - a test of stamina, partnership and strategic thinking. Find out how this discipline is winning over more and more riders in Croatia and why Baranja is the ideal ground for its development.

What is endurance riding?

Endurance riding is a competitive discipline in which horse and rider together cover marked routes ranging from 40 to as many as 160 kilometres. Unlike other equestrian sports where style or jump height is measured, the only criterion here is arriving at the finish line with the horse in the best possible condition.

This very philosophy - "horse first" - makes endurance one of the most humane equestrian sports. Veterinary checks along the route ensure the animal's welfare at all times, and disqualification due to poor horse condition is not a punishment - it is protection.

Endurance in Croatia: A growing scene

Croatia has a rich tradition of endurance riding, particularly in the continental regions with varied terrain and forest trails. The Croatian Equestrian Federation (HKS) organises several licensed races each year, and the number of registered competitors grows every season.

Baranja, situated between the Drava and Danube rivers, offers a unique combination of conditions for this discipline: the flat terrain along the Stara Drava is ideal for pace and stamina training, while the forests of Kopački rit provide trails that challenge both horse and rider at every step.

What does it take to start?

Endurance is not a sport only for the elite. Beginner programmes and shorter routes (CEI* - 80 km) are accessible to riders with basic experience and a properly conditioned horse. Three things are key: good horse fitness, the rider's understanding of pacing, and above all, the bond of trust between horse and rider that is built over years.

At Horse Riding Club Hercules, we follow the development of endurance riding with great interest. Our terrain and experienced trainers provide excellent conditions for preparation - from first long trail rides to systematic training for licensed competitions.
